The
South Brooklyn
Network

Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

Hey Girlfriend.....Congrats are in order. AND also on the new addition to the family. Your head is way up there girl and who can blame you? You take care Lucy and I know it is a nice feeling. I went into Barnes & Noble to look for Danettes' book then asked the kid who works there about it. He checked it out on the computer and told me the Park Slope Branch has it. As long as it is in there. He said (and I laughed)do you wantto order it? I said no thank you she is my daughter, thanks anyway. What a good feeling.I told her now she has to do a sequel to the Jacks Hat. Good luck again........Louise

Hi Kathleen...The Fannings. Was there a Donald and a Sonny? They lived 2 or 3 doors from Scottos Funeral Home? We used to call Sonny by his his nickname, Sonny Irish. Donald passed away in the late 50s and they had him laid out in the house. I will never forget that. .....Louise

My family came from the "HooK". Does anyone remember the "Fanning's"? My father was Thomas who just passed away at age 94. My uncles were William and Philip and they had one sister Catherine who married a Tobis Mansell. I still visit the old neighborhood with my husband and children. We kids grew up in Park Slope in a cold water flat and loved every minute of it. Does anyone remember when the plane came down over Sterling Place? I was just a kid at the time and heading to work at the Telephone Co. on Bridge Street. My taxi just turned on to Flatbush when we heard this loud roar and then the news came over the radio about the crash. We both had an Angel on our shoulders that day.

Lucy,
Sorry it took so long to respond, I was out of town for awhile. The Bob you knew was my cousin not my dad, and he passed in 2001 -- heart attack. Very young and very unexpected.

I was so happy when I came across this site. I grew up in Red Hook, went to Visitation School, graduated in 1962. Sister Mary Raymond was our 8th grade teacher, what a sweetheart she was. I had lost my Mom 2 months before graduating and she took me under her wing and was the person who let me lean on her through such a hard time in my 13 years of life. I remember graduation well, the Heavens opened up!! We were lined up in the school and praying for the rain to stop so we could walk around the corner to the church for the ceremony. It let up and as we were walking down the block, it came down again in buckets. A kind resident of the block let us ALL squeeze into his garage for shelter, where of course we continued to pray for a let up of the rain. Eventually the sun did shine on our graduation day, and we proudly walked down the aisle of Visitation to receive our diplomas. I have so many more memories of my years at Visitation, I would love to hear from people who were in my class, some of these would be Mary Sullivan, Iris Kaprat,Gloria McCafferty,Nora Saverese,to name a few. My Dad was William Connors aka/Bill or Billyboy, he worked down the docks on Pier 12, at one time Pat Joyce was his boss and he was very good friends with Sharkey, who I had the pleasure of having visit my house with my Dad many years ago when my children were small.I'll stop now or else I will fill up the whole guestbook with all my thoughts. God bless you all.
