NEW YORK -- The streetcar could eventually return to Brooklyn.
New York City's Department of Transportation will conduct a 5-month study on the feasibility of bringing back the quaint-looking trolley to the streets of the borough's Red Hook neighborhood. DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Kahn says the agency will use a federal grant to see whether the trolley would be the best transportation alternative for Red Hook residents. Currently, only one bus line connects residents to the subway system.
Streetcars were once everywhere on New York's streets. They were phased out by 1957.

I was born at 51 president street 1954.My grandma owned 47-49-51 president st.buildings. I remember the old movie theater on Columbia St called the "Happy Hour". My uncle Joe (Cupie) Iovine was the instrumental figure in dealing with the Port Authority of NY to buy all of President Street, tear down the old and build the new. It was a sad time for me, especially with the 'wars' that were going on between my family ( which occulpied a social club on President St across the street from where I lived.)Don't wish to talk further about that, at this time. But I remember the old church down the street and the fish market right next door to my house that sold (dried) bacala, that we would buy, especially for the holidays.
If anybody out there relates to my story here, PLEASE GET BACK TO ME!!
Louise **Red Hook** 9-9-2010 04:48 PM
I remember the Happy Hour and I remember the church. It was empty for years and they fianlly knocked it down. They made an Urban Meadow..with grass and flowers. The have jazz sessions there, and birthday parties for kids. My grandfather used to play cards in a social club on President St. I remember the homemade red wine also..lol Those were good times...

Does anybody remember Snookeys cand store? I think it was on Sackett and Columbia Sts? He was an old man and had a dog in the store with him. There was one counter, a glass case type counter. He sold penny candies and comics..I loved going there. How about the meat market way down Columbia St I think there was like 6 brothers and had saw dust on the floor? Saturdays Columbia and Union St was sooooo busy. The peddlers on Union St selling you name it they had it...I love those memories. My Grandparents lived at 143 Union St across from House of Pizza. I remember the trolley cars coming down Union St and the cables coming down from the wires and sparks would be flying all over. The conductor would have to get out and climb on the back of the trolley and reconnect the cables...do you remember any of this??
|
Janet 9-10-2010 10:02 AM
I remember going to a restaurant down there years ago called Snooky's it was very nice.

Ok. I turn on a baseball game and get a woman announcer. I turn on wfan to listen to football talk and get a woman talking football. I work as a guard and once asked a lady if she needed some one to walk her to her car and she says "no thank you,i have a gun" She could of protected me. That's really ok. What I'm leading up to is that we are so cunfused in "political correctness" in this country that it has become a joke. We are seen in certain areas as a country with no round ones. And we want a religous mosque built near the site of where that same religion caused the death of 3000 innocent people. Are we nuts. Do we realize that Islam builds monuments on sites where they do things like this. What are we telling the world. Could you blame them for thinking us crazy. Whats next, a monument to Auscwitz.
Lynne 9-6-2010 09:42 AM
I fully understand the part about the mosque, and I also think its an outrage that its approved by the higher ups, the part about the women talking sports and the woman carrying a gun confuses me, just how does it fit in with the mosque being built?

Just remember there was a time when the Irish and Italians were greeted with the same sort of disdain as the newcomers. I remember a time when the "true Red Hookers, ie; pointers" did not recognize any place on the landward side of Hamilton Ave.as Red Hook.I remember the resentment of those living in the Projects. My family's original house on Lorraine and Hicks was taken for the Projects. Yet, during the difficult years of WWII people were able to pull together and petty resentments forgotten. Hope all will think and be kinder and more tolerant with their words.
Rachel, I would help if I could. Except for one visit to my grandfather's foundry I never got close to the Gowanus. I was after all "a pointer"
Sorry this is so long I had to use 3 postings
WONDERFUL OLD TIMER 8-31-2010 06:32 PM
THERE ARE QUITE A FEW PEOPLE TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH ANTHONY CHECHILO. REGARDING OLD TIMERS IF AND ONE CAN LET HIM KNOW THE TIME AND DATE PLEASE DO SO. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE WONDERING IF HE IS OK. THEY ALSO WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM. THANKS FROM A WONDERFUL OLD TIMER.

A general comment about some of the postings on this board: I'm somewhat perplexed at the vitriol and invective I see directed at Rachel, artists, yuppies and newcomers in general. Granted,as with any group, there are some who may have "attitudes" and are unpleasant, but respect is most frequently returned with respect. I'm in Red Hook weekly and the only unhappy encounter I've ever had was with someone who was clearly neither a yuppie nor artist.
As to my credentials: Mine is an old family (Nuttall, Abbott, Hough) of "pointers" who landed in Red Hook in the late 1870's. My paternal family (Murphy) arrived ca. 1895 to join family already in place. My grandmother, mother, Aunts and Uncles all attended the original PS 27. I went to PS 30 and was baptized in Christ Chapel as were all of the maternal relatives. My father's family were Visitation attendees.
Lucy Fraser Suarez 9-2-2010 08:02 AM
My Grandmother Lucy Liberta later Stockwell was born and raised in Red Hook on Walcott Street. She was born 1n 1896? Her parents ansesteors came from Austria & Germany via Ellis Island. She too baptised in Christ Chapel Church. There is a stained glass window in the church from one of my family Liberta trees.I had a great Aunt Mildred Liberta who was a Sunday school teacher and A choir teacher as well. I too went to P.S. 30s in the 50s.And was baptized into Christ Chapel by Father Fox a really good man! I enjoyed most of my Fresh Air fund trips via him!
|
Sheila Murphy 9-2-2010 10:41 AM
Lucy,
I think we are a generation apart. I was baptized by Father Lloyd, predecessor to Father Fox. My cousin Jack Byrne was an altar bor for Father Fox, who baptized my cousin Douf Flynn. I was at PS 30 in the mid-late 40"s. Decamped in 4th grade for LI. Your Grandmother & great Aunt would have known my Grandmother & siblings, all born ca.the same time. My mother was also a Sunday school teacher. Do you remember the Teller sisters? Lettie died at 102 in 1993
|
Lucy Suarez 9-2-2010 10:26 PM
YES! I do remember the Teller Sisters! Mildred Liberta lived in the same house as them as well as Father Fox on Sullivan st. !02! Wow! They were dainty little women! Take Care good talkin withya!
|
Lucy Suarez 9-2-2010 10:30 PM
Lillie & Lettie yes! My cousin Richard Stockwell used to ring the bell at Christ Chapel . Rember the booster books with everyones names and address in it? and the paper banks that would come out around lent time how about the little plants that would be sold for Easter & Mothers day? I remember the back part of the church. When last I saw it it was gone (the back part) It seemed so starnge to me seeing it gone. I remeber the Christ Chapel building fund!
|
Sheila Murphy 9-3-2010 12:59 PM
I always remembered Lettie as a "little old lady". My mom later told me that as a child she thought the same. Lettie seemed eternal, imagine my shock to learn she was the same age as my grandmother. Lillian a bit younger died at 95, in 1995. They both were, very, very sweet and kind, devoted pillars of the church. It must have been difficult for them as things changed around them. They stayed in Red Hook for a very long time. There is a Teller window in the chapel.
|
Sheila Murphy 9-3-2010 01:08 PM
I remember the banks, given out for Lent. We were to put in change for the support of missionary work abroad. I have a vague memory of Ester weekend ceremony when all the Sunday School students placed the banks in a big box like cross.
I never put money in the bank until the last possible day and then begged change from all the sundry relatives.
I'll.have to ask o ne of the cousins if he has one of the booster books. His mom saved everything related to the point.

ohmy 9-5-2010 10:17 PM
senora..they are scary. do you see them riding their bikes? Sit straight up and with a dress and heels no less. They look like the witch from the Wizard of Oz on those bikes. And talk about white? They are so white their skin looks transparent. And why does their hair stink? The breath stinks like garlic and the hair smells like sweat. They look like the clothes they wear were bought at the thrift store and they are to small. Sleeves are always too short and who wears cowboy boots with a summer dress in 90 degree weather? And it isn't getting any better more and more are coming in to Carroll Gardens,Cobble Hill,Red Hook, and forget about Park Slope, they invaded, people, they are here weather we like it or not. They are like bedbugs they keep spreading.

|
Lucy Fraser Suarez 9-10-2010 01:39 PM
yes! Ethel they were all GOOD PEOPLE! Nothing but kindness and understanding in their hearts! It was a Loving Church too! Everyone knew each other alot of comrodery and respect. I loved it when it was Easter time and we would do the stations of the cross by walking from one stained glass window to another. Good and fond memories...

Pinky, are you the Pinky related to Mary McGregor and Mrs. Milady? I have some pictures of you taken in the backyard of our house(Houghs') on Wolcott Street.
Ken Brown, sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Computer crash, and still working full time at my advanced age. You brought back a long forgotten memory of your unscheduled departure and subsequent re-capture during your 1st day of kindergarten at Visitation. I'll be out of the country for the next three weeks but will email you when I get back.
Ken Brown 9-2-2010 09:36 PM
Hi Sheila,
Good to hear from you.I have some good and funny memories from back when. I can't believe it was 65 years ago. This site is really great. I grew up in Red Hook, when I came back, with many of your former classmates from PS 30. We see each other from time to time, thanks to Frank Campania. Have a good trip.
|
Sheila Murphy 9-3-2010 01:13 PM
Hey Ken,
My flight's been delayed courtesy of Earl. I was upstate last week to see my cousin and we were trying to remember the name of the blonde boy who lived across the street from our house. Remember there was an alley, flanked by a garage with a two story house in the back. He lived on the 2nd floor.
Wonder how many know there was once a match factory in Red Hook and it moved to Red Hook, New York. Some of the old Red Hook, Brooklyn residents and factory workers, followed the job and moved upstate to Red Hook, NY (near Hudson).
really..must get packing, but this is fun.
|
Ken Brown 9-8-2010 01:36 PM
Hello Sheila,
I don,t remeber a blond haired boy b ut,when I was a teenager I remember a guy named Danny Sheehan lived across the street from your house. He was sandy haired when I knew him - maybe he was blond when younger.

they said familys of 9-11 want the

She did not lose anyone on 9-11
Anyone can say anything For all we know
They could be getting pay From the Mosque people You can say you are anyone
most of the people there did not lose amyone in 9-11 I think if the TV is going to cover a story Find out if they say they are familys of 9-11 That they are .The real familys after all they been living with pain of 9-11 should

Hi everyone,
I am a composer living in Gowanus, and I'm writing a song about the Gowanus Canal for a concert next month. I'm looking for people who work and/or live near the Canal. If you have stories to share about the Canal or Gowanus in general, I'd love to hear from you and maybe incorporate your anecdote (and possibly your speaking voice, if you'll agree to be recorded) into my piece. Drop me a line and tell me a bit about yourself if you're interested.
Thanks,
Rachel
fedup 8-27-2010 01:31 PM
How long have you lived in Gowanus? You people kill me you just come here from Dakota or Iowa and think you know Brooklyn. Give it a break.
|
John T 8-27-2010 03:55 PM
Could this be another Yuppie (newcomer) looking to get rich off of information fron the original South Brooklyners? Tell them NOTHING.
|
fedup 8-27-2010 07:09 PM
Thats just what it is, then they get a goverment grant, open a store front and say they are artists. We can't have enough artists cabinet makers and now composers? Give me a break. They will get no information here I hope.
|
Rachel 8-28-2010 08:27 AM
Hi all,
I've actually been living here for several years. I have no government grant. I have a six figure debt and I'm barely making ends meet. I "think I'm an artist" because I've been doing it my whole life and have studied hard, just like you have spent a lot of time and energy doing what you do in life. I'm working on this project for free because I've been given an interersting challenge. And you know what? I've met some great people so far, people who have been very generous and helpful and fascinating to talk to. People who are your neighbors. I'm really enjoying working on the piece, and it's too bad that, if you feel you own this community, you would rather make some incorrect assumptions than share your expertise. If nothing else it would be a better way to show off what you know and feel good about yourselves than lashing out at a complete stranger. But I wish you well.
|
wasonceours 8-28-2010 09:36 AM
no Rachel when you reach your accomplishment you will feel ike you own the community just like the rest of the yuppies. They are all snobs with their noses high up in the air like we don't belong here in the neighborhood. Rude people and quick to complain about things. We have jobs also and work hard for what we have. Apartments and houses are taken away from us because the landlords know they will make more on the yuppies. They also come with bedbugs. Not ashamed to share them either. So hope someone will help you compose your song about our Gowanus Canal. You should have been here when you couldn't stand the smell then you would really have had something to sing about.
|

Rachel, the views expressed by certain individuals are not the views of everyone. They are people who have seen their life ending because all the Red Hook people are long time gone and they are still in the Hook. They had plenty of time to buy a home when Red Hook was in plight, but for what ever reasons, most likely they did not plan on staying either, they chose not to. So now Boo Hoo Hoo people are coming here and buying and I am a jerk for not doing it first. I for one only have memories of the Canal being a smelly, dug out piece of earth that had something resembling liquid in it. Good luck

See, this is all really interesting. I would love to talk to people who have been around to see these changes, ESPECIALLY if you're angry and feel like you've been duped by the yuppies or the housing market or the health hazards or any of it. I'm not trying to paint a rosy picture or make kitsch out of anyone's plight. My big question is "What do you see when you look at the Canal?" Seriously, hit me up so we can talk.

Well said Rachel,
Lots of luck.

Google and you might be able to find information about the bodies that have thrown in the Canal many, many, years ago and who was caught throwing them in.
True Red Hookers know, and probably won't talk about it either. Maybe if they clean it up, they just might find - what's his name -- oh, Hoffa.

i still live here in the neighborhood--no one has 'pushed' me out. but...i must say that the 'newcomers' live in a world of thier own. they have a sense of entitlement and look down on old timers. most of them are extremely rude! a also can't stand their nasally voices. i would rather live with the nastiest old timers any day!! i wish they would all come back.

thanks Penny I thought I was the only one that thinks these new comers are rude and nasty, and would love for the nasty old times would come back. There was conversation with them the old timers I mean. if you are not one of the new comers you wont get the right time of day from them but they will give you some of their bedbugs they transported from their yokel town in the midwest. Wish they would go back. It is just a matter of time when they will be evry place. The invasion of the body snatchers.

My cousin and I met with Rachel today to talk to her about our personal experiences growing up in Gowanus. She was a nice young woman who had a genuine interest in the neighborhood. She offered to get us coffee during our chat and could not have been more polite and professional. We were happy to participate in her piece. You show your ignorance by dismissing people based on what you think you know about them.

Many thanks to Gio and everyone who responded (for better or worse) to my request. I have to conclude my interviews for now. I've learned a lot and met some great people along the way, and I look forward to more as I continue to live and work here.

Red Hook always had a kind of charm.I know, I grew up there. The closeness of the families, friends and even the people you didn't know that well and there weren't many of them. We really all knew each other. Red Hook is a small town. I'm speaking about all of Van Brunt St, Conover St, Wolcott St, Verona St.Coffey St, all of Richard St, Visitation Pl.,Dikeman St, Pioneer St and others which I can't think of at the moment. us old timers remember our neighborhood very well. All our stores, the A&P, the cleaners, the hardware store, Amendola's, the Ice Cream Parlors, Skinny Andy's. My Grandfather's bar which was Joe's Bar & Grill and all the the other bars. We remember Tony's Bar. We remember the owners of all these businesses. It was our town our small town which was why everything was on such a personal level. Everyone knew everyone's else's parents and kids. We all looked out for one another. These young people coming into Red Hook do not know about any of this nor would they understand the feeling that we have about Red Hook. I only go shoping in Fairway but I know the feeling these old timers are speaking about on this site. The people that work in Fairway are nicer to us than these new young people. They treat you with the respect that us old timers deserve. I know it's hard to deal with change but I believe we just have to try to ignore them because they are truly missing something. And it's something they don't know about or were ever taught by their parents. Us old timers are warm and loving where as they are cold and shallow. I don't care who they think they are because I know who I am I'm a sweet girl from Red Hook. When I go there I feel like a kid again all my memories of the wonderful childhood my parents gave me come back to mind. This no one will ever take away from me.
